Considering Shredder appears a certain way (for the most part)in the comics and most media, and the way you're saying in only one series...Yeah, I'd say the prior is what most people consider the 'standard version' of him. Most older people, when they think of the Shredder. Think of the 90's cartoon and movies. Whom are where the shredder took his place as main villain. Younger audiences likely think of the 2003 show since it was deservedly huge hit. And the recent animated movie and CGI movie Neither of which are like the original comic Shredder. As for comic readers, again all I'm pointing out is that his presence in the comics is minimal compared to other characters. And when he did reapear in the three times he's been active (including the failed resurrection attempt) he'd undergone significant changes. So it's all a matter of opinion on what is the "standard" Shredder. Personally I think if you do, pick the most ruthless, effective, interesting and powerful one. So the turtles can have a worthy foe. My first introduction to Shredder was here. He was a lot like in the movie and I guess the cartoons as well.

By the way, did the Turtles know of Karai in the 03 run? I have to assume they've encountered her, yes? They did more then encounter her, she became a major character from the arc "City at War" and onward, where she was introduced. This arc dealt with the war in the criminal underworld after every faction tried to carve up Shredder's empire in NY. She later stayed on as Ch'rell's lieutenant and his most loyal one until he was defeated in the 4th season and exiled to a frozen planet. (Thought he returned in the awesome to TV movie Turtles forever whom you can watch on Youtube that is basically a love letter to turtle fans). Afterward she was the leader of the Foot. Simply put, the movie has its own sense of continuity obviously. taking a character from the most recent (and popular) TMNT canon is only a logical choice for those fans. Which happens to be the 2003 show for none comic readers and the Mirage comic for comic readers (whom also has Karai) Thought as I pointed out here earlier to Erik-EL. Laird whom also wrote for the 2003 show introduced into the mirage comics some of the show's creations (like Hun) because he liked them so much.

My first introduction to Shredder was here. that cause you're a real man *brofist* He was a lot like in the movie and I guess the cartoons as well. He was marginally like the 90's movie version (thought his criminal empire much more impressive. Nothing like thew whiny silly 90's cartoon version. And he gave a lot of inspiration to the 2003 version.

Long story short, you view standard Shredder as the version in the 03 animated series. 95% of everyone else sees him (generic) as a mesh of the comic/early show/video games/early movies.

I only said I guess he is because I do not really remember too much from the 90s cartoon but you related the movie and cartoon versions of Shredder so I just went with it.
But yeah. I was not old enough to read the 1984 comics as they were released. I got the trade published in 1989 collecting the first few issues of volume 1.

Somehow, the thought never crossed my mind to look for trades of the classic. Thanks for the idea.

Not sure if you will have any luck finding those. They only published the first 11 issues of volume 1 anyway and it was released 22 years ago by a now defunct comic book company.

If you go to Laird's Website, all TMNT mirage/image stuff is accessible. And with IDW purchasing the rights, it includes reprinting of earlier TMNT comics.

Yeah but will they reprint all the various volumes of TMNT? Last time I checked, the site advertised that all trades were available for purchase. There were also online versions. Edit: I don't knew if IDW will reprint previous volumes. But the contract of publication the signed with Laird gave them that right.

Is back in the sewers worth watching ? I often get a mixed answer with that question. some of the episodes are O.K. But it's nothing compared to the original 2003 seasons.
