Drizzt- thor is an awesome character, I hope you do get into him. His volume in 2007 written by JMS is a good place to start. Then just continue on from there until you get to current. Officially this month, the 'Thor' titles has reverted back to the old 'journey into mystery' title, but kept the current numbering. So this Wednesday actually, Thor is now titled journey into mystery #622. Thor also has a new on going titled 'the mighty thor' which will start at #1 this month as well.

Do you need to know a lot of prior knowledge on Thor to start reading Astonishing Thor?

Nope, it's a completely standalone story.

You can pretty much jump right into Astonishing Thor, although, there are a few cosmic characters involved in the story (Stranger, Collector, Ego) which you may also not be familiar with.
Yes, Astonishing Thor is in Marvel 616 continuity.
And I've liked it so far. I usually like Thor much more in a cosmic setting, and this is what that is. It's been a pretty good and fun read so far.

The art has been great as well. Although, Choi's version of Thor comes off a much younger than he is normally depicted.
nexus- I thought JIM #622 was alright. Purely set up and nothing else much happened. Also, I'm not a fan of art. Same thing as Gillen's run on Thor after JMS, I just don't like Braithwaite's messy pencils combined with no inks. Comes off way to colored pencil-ish for my tastes.

Same thing as Gillen's run on Thor after JMS, I just don't like Braithwaite's messy pencils combined with no inks. Comes off way to colored pencil-ish for my tastes. Yeah, it was set-up as all new issue 1's typically are, but it was brilliant set up. The way it opened up with the birds, showing what Loki's become, where he's been, what everyone thinks of him, what Thor thinks of him, and how he plans to deal with it all, everything was laid out perfectly. The art was astounding to be honest. It's actually how I feel most Thor stories should be drawn and colored, giving off that unique, traditional look. Didn't really get a "messy" pencil vibe at all, and the colors were so well placed. Things like the lights that came off of Loki's aura, and how the Bifrost bridge was on the last page. As far as art is concerned, I'd say it was the best thing about the issue. The lack of inks actually enhanced the value of it to me. Things flowed well together. I had a great experience with the issue.

It was definitely good for a set up issue. Ah! I feel the complete opposite on the art. The way I think it should be drawn is like how Olivier Coipel and team does it. Lucky me he is on 'The Mighty Thor' for the next 6 months I really don't like the lack of inks, it just bugs me. To each his own.

Coipel's Thor, it's aight, but that just seems normal for me. Definitely good, but nothin' spectacular. Sorta like the bar for what I'd set for how good Thor art should be at the very least. The kinda good that you should expect. Nahmsayin'? But that Journey Into Mystery art, and that art that was goin' on when Thor went to Hell, 'dat right there stood out as greatness. But yeah, it's definitely a taste thing.

Yeah same creative team when Thor went to hell, as I'm sure you know. Marvel apparently likes the idea of a Thor title without inks because Fraction and Ferry's run so far has been without inks as well.
I also liked the way Scot Eaton drew Thor in Iron Man/Thor.

Interesting, but given what you've described, yeah I can see how you'd like it. As for me, I thought the art overall in that book was good, but for some reason I didn't care for how Thor was at all. Like everyone in the series was drawn well, except for him, which is weird because he was drawn the exact same way. I don't know if it was the boldness of colors or what, but it wasn't my kinda Thor. That said, I still haven't finished that series. Only got the first 2 issues, then didn't look into the rest. Did I lose interest?

It ended up being a bit of a let down by the last issue to be honest. I liked it a lot the first couple issues, then it was just average after that.

FX is playing Ghost Rider amongst a bunch of old Marvel movies today. They just showed a preview clip of Loki that looked pretty awesome.

Yeah I saw the previews for that superhero sunday FX is doing. Thanks for reminding me because after the Celtics vs Heat game I'll turn it on.
Awesome, I don't think I've seen that clip yet.

I never really realised how powerful Thor was, until I saw his Wiki Page.
