After news that 'Thor' director Kenneth Branagh would not be returning for the superhero's second solo outing, everyone was wondering who would take over the role to helm the film. Kenneth Branagh proved that 'Thor' could legitimately work as a blockbuster movie, as well as a movie that could be taken seriously. The previously rumored replacement, Patty Jenkins, has just been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios. Here is the press release:
Marvel has been well known for 'inspired' or 'surprise' directing choices, and this one is no different. It seems that Marvel looks for directors with a clear direction and vision for the character, and doesn't settle for big names and lackluster 'dumb action director' names. Patty Jenkins, although somewhat new, is regarded as a talented director who is sure to bring a strong and serious take on the character.
Also, as you may have noticed, 'Thor 2' is now slated for a November 15, 2013 release, instead of a July 2013 release. This also just happened, as Disney's struggling project starring Johnny Depp, 'The Lone Ranger' has no regained it's legs, and is scheduled for a May 31, 2013 release, and Disney have also decided to release "Phineas and Ferb" in 'Thor 2's" previous spot. This is an interesting bit of news, as this will be the first comic book movie to be released in the Fall-Winter Holiday's time slot, which is very lucrative as well, especially for fantasy films. It seems like a good move from Disney, and also a sign that it has faith in the film to perform and be well received.

Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct THOR 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster THOR, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.
Patty Jenkins previously directed MONSTER starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award® for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, has also directed episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Most recently, she directed “Pearl,” one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime’s original movie FIVE.
In addition to THOR 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012, and IRON MAN 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.
Jenkins is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Alan Wertheimer
