So this is basically the ledger version of my history thread from the CV where I would debunk myths and factually wrong beliefs about history that are a cancer on popular culture.
So basically, you want to talk history, war, great heroes etc. Do it here and as someone who is working on getting a PHD in history I will happily do my best to enlighten/give my opinion on this matter.
So I to get the ball rolling I will debunk a few myths.
Myth: Samurai were uber sophisticated warriors of honor that died before doing something against their code and the best evar! Truth: Before the Edo Era, 90% of samurai were illiterate also the code of Bushido from the eras preceeding the Edo era were completely different and even included a built in justification to murder your lord without loosing your honor
And from the Edo period and after the samurai class was reduced to a loitering social class deliberately kept in control through this code because the imperial government was afraid of a return to the Sengoku troubles. Furthermore, those samurai that actually did stuff and held positions usually got appointed there for one of two reasons 1-They were the richest and most influential, thus they were naturally appointed to higher honors 2-The government appointed someone else because they wanted to keep control of a particular government function.

Very interesting idea. I hadn't seen the CV version. I will see what I can post here. please do ;D Myth: Only Asia has real martial arts. Europeans traditions didn't know shit about unarmed fighting techniques and were basically just swinging fists like drunken idiots. Truth: all cultures had martial arts. Europe was actually a hotbed for martial arts development as it had contact with no less the three continents and even invented several martial art styles that gave birth to subsequent ones. For example the greeks had a formal style called pankration that was basically based on two principles " everything is permitted" and " learn to defend yourself from every type of attack" The style by today's analysis was visually speaking something like mixed martial arts on kryptonian steroids incorparating very complex and deadly grappling techniques as well as punches, kicks and basically learning to lash out with every portion of your body. The egyptians had formal martial arts schools and as of the reign of Ramses II soldiers in his army were required to attend them to learn the basics of unarmed, grappling and armed combat. Knights inherited the techniques of the Greeks, later Romans and also incorporated techniques from the germanic tribes that were their ancestors. The curriculum of knights required them to learn unarmed combat as well as grappling techniques and close up small weapon (daggers, knives, etc).

What are your thought's on Atlantis? Fact or fiction?

What are your thought's on Atlantis? Fact or fiction? Fiction without a doubt in my mind. First because the source of the first recorded legends, Plato whom first exposed the idea of Atlantis in his work Timaeus was written both as entertainment and as part of his reflections on proper government and society. While no written record explicitly says that Plato admitted " This is just a story I made up" or " This is a true place". The fact is that the famous philosopher was if anything a theoretician much more then a historian and his story of Atlantis were intended being part of the ideas published in the earlier Republic text from 380. So to speak plainly whether it was perceived as real or not was irrelevant to the aims of Plato who were about debate over their own society, Athens. Furthermore, continental drift theory is fairly well developed nowadays and it clearly shows that it is impossible for an entire continent to sink under the sea, at best very, very small islands may disapear under the sea over many years as waters rise mainly due to global temperatures dying. However, this means that population migration would happen as it naturally did in those occasions and they would either move deeper inland or to other larger nearby island higher above sea level. And example of this is the coastal history of Japan and the historical migrations of the polynesian peoples In effect it is impossible for an Island to simply sin and dispensary according to all current scientific evidence.

Wasn't is apparent that they had technology that rivalled humanity of only a few years prior to computers? I don't believe it myself. I just like the idea that human advancement wasn't just us.

Wasn't is apparent that they had technology that rivalled humanity of only a few years prior to computers? actually, Plato's story has them at about greek culture level technological advancement, then when the lost continent craze hit the world in the 1800's then people started making this crazy shit up about advanced technology destroying them and whatnot...

What is your favourite age of civilization? And why? As best as I can answer My personal fields I'm likely going to specialize in are early to crusade era medieval period (circa 600 AD to 1200 AD) and Late Antiquity (Circa second century AD to 5th century AD) This is because I am fascinated by the transitions of thought, culture and society that happened during that period. Plus I love reading on warfare tactics and such. So these periods are especially interesting to me I am however very much interested with all periods up to the Early 1900's after 1917 however, not so much. What are you feelings on the Lock Ness Monster? And entertaining tourist trap, nothing more. Thought from a mythological perspective, the topic of wyrms and serpents is really complex and fascinating.

Who was the best/most accomplished warrior nation in history? Depends on based on what criteria you would define best warrior as. The term warrior is hard to define and context often plays a key role in how an individual appears to later analysis.

Medieval plate armor is a cumbersome, impractical piece of equipment that gives you the protection, but also the agility of a tank. I know this is a myth, but I'd like to hear a professional opinion about it.
