I figured we could use a thread to talk about different ideas on how we could make some scratch for the site.

This news section is already better than CVs. I do agree with you, though.

We should get some more content and features first IMO.

The only way I could think of gaining revenue for the site would be if we managed to set up a homepage (with all our news articles and features and stuff) and then pimped out some ads. I know hardcoregaming101 does that, but apparently the income was pretty weak and now they ask for donations.
getting a ton of content first would be a good idea though. we could work on writing some unique features off on our own if/when we do manage to set up a homepage, because if the site gets big enough then I don't think we could keep running it off proboards (but that possibility is a long way off so it doesn't really matter right now).

I agree with this. We do need some features. I have been brainstorming to try to think of some stuff. I will be thinking about some Contests to sponsor.

Websites that advertise product from other companies get paid a shiny penny for every click. It is how that one myspace girl made over a million dollars designing myspace layouts without charging the users anything at all.

I know it's been said 40,000 times already, but there's no reason anyone should pay a penny for this site. If we one day get big enough to have our own location and have AMAZING exclusives to offer, then perhaps we can see about raking in some cash. In the meantime, I'll try by best when comic con comes around to have us do some reporting and what not. In the meantime, everyone and anyone is free to post news(worthy) articles.

With the idea I suggested, no one would ever need to be charged anything to use the site but it would still make money.

Charging your community should be an absolute last resort, IMHO.

Charging your community should be an absolute last resort, IMHO. I agree. Wikipedia seems to be doing okay with a voluntary donation system though. I still like my idea better but it does require us getting our site out there more and not having it be such an elitist site.

We'll need A LOT more traffic before anyone would decide to advertise with us, though. But I agree, it's a better tactic than "GIVE US MONIES AND WE'LL MAKE VIDEOS FOR YOU!"

I think the point of how to make some money is so that we could get off proboards and have a little more freedom with what we can and can't do, but really i don't know how we'd accomplish said goal.

I agree that we need to get off of the proboards. Once I get one my feet, we could talk about looking for price ranges for quality hosting. If it is reasonable, I would not mind fronting the cash as long as it will be a really great site.

I can't remember the name of the site I went to, but when I used it to check CV's maximum revenue, it said that it made $2,000,000 - $3,000,000 last year. So, if G-Man tells you he doesn't get paid for CV (he does it often), don't believe him....
As far as getting money for this site, sounds like a plan. We just need ideas. LOL.

Nobody donates that much and there aren't any ads.

Lol from what? Nobody donates that much and there aren't any ads. I've heard various people complain about CV having ads, and one of the features in the paid accounts is that they are ad-free.
Which doesn't make any sense since I've never seen any ads either.
